The School of the Event Horizon
The School of the Event Horizon (Kate Pickering, Steven Levon Ounanian, Emily Rosamond) formed in 2014 after collaborating during the Trialogues Peer residency at ASC Gallery, London. Since their first exhibition, "True Stories from the Event Horizon", they have exhibited, performed and led public writing workshops at Brockley Artist Village Studios, London; Tenderpixel, London; and Temporary Arts Projects, Southend-on-Sea.
The School attempts to harness the black hole’s propensity to warp and mutate space-time. It examines the application of extreme gravitational force to objects of study, to the point at which these objects condense, break down and re-combine with other objects. In such states, relationships between ideas and their material substrates become liquid: both tend toward pure information. In the process of this liquefaction, waves of fiction ripple through objects, reworking their histories and futures. Time becomes elastic and reversible.

A product launch was held for the Oracular Sponge Version 003.1a, with demo and unboxing ceremony.
Oracular Sponge (version 003.1a), 2014 For the exhibition "before breakfast we talked about the furthest visible point before it all disappeared" at Tenderpixel, London, the School of the Event Horizon designed, advertised and launched a fictitious time-granulation device, called the Oracular Sponge (version 003.1a). The gallery displayed a packaging design for the product, alongside a press release advertising its launch. At a closing event, the School gave a product demo, ceremonially unboxing the product (made of thin air), and describing its form and functions using hand gestures.

Lloyds: Get Your Own Whistle, 2014 Digital prints, take-away text and reading/performance The School of the Event Horizon spent a week at TAP (Temporary Arts Project) in Southend on the Liminal Space residency. We produced a text in response to the recent closure of Southend's Essex House, a Lloyds bank support centre, entailing the loss of over 600 jobs in the locality. The text, Lloyds. Get Your Own Whistle, was installed and performed at the closing event for the residency, along with a public writing workshop.

The School of the Event Horizon's first exhibition and live performance, True Stories from the Event Horizon, was curated by Peer Sessions at ASC Gallery in April 2014.

The School of the Event Horizon may or may not be teetering on the edge of a black hole, depending on your viewpoint. It is situated in a place and time where place and time become unhinged. Pickering, Rosamond and Ounanian attempt to harness the black hole's propensity to warp and mutate space-time. Performing the rites of a past/future order, they reassemble corrupted facts, retrieve what might have been lost, and set about the tasks of sifting, connecting, destroying and reconstructing information.
