"The bringing together of incongruous topos is an explicit content of Steven Ounanian’s work - from the Church of Antioch to tracking the route of a stolen bicycle. Such intervention into the sensitive zone named ‘belief’, undeniably makes me feel awkward about lapsed religious obligations (is it possible that I just forgot that I believed?). However (one might argue), if art makes us face things that we find uncomfortable, testing the boundaries of our opinions, then that is precisely the point. The way in which Ounanian relates these issues on a human scale, avoiding conscious stylisation, disrupts our expectations of what it is to be a contemporary artist and researcher.”
